What is Rooted & Written? Rooted & Written is a fully-funded, tuition-free professional writing program for writers of color, hosted by The Writers Grotto in San Francisco. This year’s programming includes a symposium, write-ins, and readings/panels.

When was Rooted & Written founded? Rooted & Written was founded in 2019.

Who founded Rooted & Written? The program was conceptualized and founded by Salvadoran writer Roberto Lovato with Susan Kiyo Ito, Vanessa Cabrera, Jesus Francisco Sierra, Aditi Malhotra, and Melissa Pandika.

How do I register for the symposium? If you are a Rooted & Written alumni, you will receive a link from rootedwritten (at) gmail (dot) com email on March 31st at 12 pm. Please note there is a limit of 40 alumni, available on a first come first serve basis.
If you are not one of the first 40, your name will be added to a waitlist and we will notify you if space becomes available.

What format will the 2025 Rooted & Written Symposium take? The 2025 symposium will be held virtually.

How many participants will attend the 2025 symposium? Forty alumni from previous Rooted & Written conferences will participate.

How can I apply to participate in the 2025 Rooted & Written Symposium? There is no open application process for the general public. Alumni of Rooted & Written will receive an email with a link to apply. Only the first forty alumni to apply will be admitted, and there will also be a waitlist for additional interested alumni.

How is participation in the symposium determined? Selection for the symposium is on a first-come, first-served basis.

What type of programming is included in the symposium? The symposium includes classes and workshops focused on both the craft of writing and the business aspects of the literary industry.

What is the source of funding for the 2025 symposium? The symposium is funded by an incremental grant received by the Zellerbach Foundation, Grants for the Arts, California Arts Council.
